Retain your smile results

An important part of any orthodontic treatment is the retention phase. Without a retainer to hold your smile in alignment, your teeth can start to shift back to their original positions after treatment.

What is the retention phase?

The role of the retention phase is to help your teeth stabilise in their new post-treatment positions. While it usually takes between 18 to 24 months to straighten your teeth, your teeth will need extra time to adjust to their new alignment.

After your braces or aligners have been removed Dr Darsh Patel will fit you with custom retainers. We recommend you wear your retainers for a minimum of one year; however, for best results, you should utilise them throughout your lifetime.

Retainers

Types of retainers

At SmartDontics®, we offer two kinds of retainers to help you keep the results you worked so hard for: removable retainers and fixed retainers.

Removable retainers

Removable retainers are like thin sports mouthguards or Invisalign® clear aligners and sit over your teeth. To begin with, you will need to wear your retainers day and night, but after your teeth have had time to settle, we'll advise you just to wear them at night. Because the retainers are removable, you can eat, brush and floss regularly.

Fixed retainers

A fixed retainer is a thin wire attached to the back surface of your teeth. This retainer is permanently fixed, so you don’t have to worry about remembering to wear it. Because food can get trapped in the wire, we will show you the best cleaning techniques to use if you are fitted with this option.
